Earthenware Metallic Glazes

These are oxide based glazes and so to achieve a metallic sheen you do need to fire at exactly the temperature given with minimum soak - different heatwork (long slow firing or fast high firing) can effect the finished result. The pictures show it fired and with glaze coat and with bright lights on them.

These contain high levels of metal including lead and so are not food safe glazes!

Wipe away the salts that are produced during bisque firing - they can reboil during glaze firing causing problems and also block the pores stopping a glaze from sticking.

Fast bisque firing can trap gasses in the piece which then expand during the glaze firing and split the piece to escape or cause underglazes to peel off, glazes to blister and leave pin holes behind. Slow bisque firing - especially from 750 - 950oC can work wonders in improving glaze firing problems.
